Using Working Versions

Working versions do not exist for XML-based content.

Thanks to Consolo’s support for working versions, you can work with several parallel versions of a page. You choose when and if a working version should be published. This feature is useful when you want to change a page over a long period of time, or if you want to finishing editing a page, but publish it later. It is also useful for making different versions of a page, and maybe presenting them to colleagues.

This guide shows you how to create, work with and publish a working version.

Create a Working Version

There are two different ways of creating a working version:

Image Create Page VersionAlternative 1: Every time you save your changes in a web page, the dialog window Save Changes is displayed. Instead of clicking the option Publish Now, you choose the option Create Page Version. The Versions Manager is then opened and you can see your new version there.

Alternative 2: Surf up to the page you want to make a working version of and choose Versions of… in Consolo’s menu, OR find the page in the Page Structure, right-click on it and select Versions. In either case, the Versions Image Duplicate Page Version Manager will be opened. The item Working Version is selected. Click the Duplicate button. In a moment, the new working version will appear.

Editing a Working Version

Editing a working version is like editing any page. If you do not have the versions manager open, open it through any of the ways described above in alternative 2, and select the version you want to edit. The version is displayed in the browser window. Click Edit.

When you save your changes at this point, it will only be possible to choose the option Create Page Image Save Page Version Version. This means that your changes are being saved to the version you are currently working with. The Publish Now button is not present in this mode because it is very easy to choose it by mistake.

Publishing a Working Version

Image Publish Page VersionIf you do not have the versions manager open, you can open it using either of the ways described above in alternative 2, and select the version you want to publish. Click the Publish Selected Version button in the toolbar.

Your working version has now been published. The working version will replace the current version, which in turn will be stored as a backup copy.
